The Opportunity

The CAL will play a leadership role within Abt Britain with focus on microeconomic and private sector development, and a range of clients including FCDO. Working to the Managing Director, they will have three primary responsibilities:

  1. Strategy: developing and delivering a strategy for the company to be a leader in economic growth and economic governance technical excellence.

  2. Growth: setting Abt Britain Global’s business development targets in Economic Development and driving growth in Abt’s Economic Development programmes by cultivating client relationships, identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, and selling Abt’s relevant capabilities and offerings; and

  3. Thought leadership: Facilitating or producing Economic Development knowledge products, drawing on company data, analysis and experience, to contribute to thinking and Abt Britain Global’s external profile. Disseminating FCDO or other client priorities to key internal stakeholders, helping to inform new technical approaches, prototypes, proofs of concept, marketing campaigns, and formulating talent acquisition and development strategies.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes a FCDO client account plan and develops and implements a growth strategy for Economic Development for the UK market and is accountable for meeting associated sales targets.

  • Working with Client Account Leads across other technical areas within UK office identity collaborative pipeline development where appropriate.

  • Drives Abt’s internal understanding of relevant FCDO strategies, policies. budgets, programming and priorities at the global and mission level to inform programme design on Economic Development, win themes, competitive positioning and price to win activities.

  • Consistently and frequently disseminates client intelligence and priorities from a London and from Missions, to ensure internal stakeholders are developing and executing approaches for project and technical delivery that reflects best practice and FCDO policies so that financial and impact objectives are met or exceeded.

  • Drives growth by collaborating to build and maintain a healthy pipeline of relevant opportunities.

  • Oversees the activities of the “Opportunity Owner or Lead” for new pursuits, which may include directly or indirectly supporting capture, and proposal development activities. Provides input into negotiating the scope, pricing, and resourcing of pursued work.

  • Regularly attends client meetings, and develops and maintains relationships with current and new client decision makers.

  • Develops and expands client relationships through advisory interactions and thought leadership.

  • Attends key conferences and industry events that are relevant to the client and to future growth.

  • Acts as programme director to Abt UK programs with FCDO as agreed.

  • Leads the development of design of technical solutions for winning bids for FCDO and other clients.

  • Collaborates with Abt delivery teams to ensure project technical implementation is impactful and sustainable and that technical approaches and deliverables meet client satisfaction.

  • Attends regular management meetings with Managing Director to discuss sales/delivery activity, risks, etc.

  • Identifies and promotes implementation approaches that reinforce nature positive and climate resilient growth, localization, systems thinking, and gender, equity and social inclusion.

  • Fosters an environment to elevate and support Abt’s Vision, Mission, Values and Culture and Strategic Priorities.

  • Models and reinforces throughout the account Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility.

What We Value

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in Economic Development within the international development sector, providing client relationship management, technical professional services delivery, and project management through professional services contractors or non-profit organizations.

  • Experience in developing and managing programmes that incorporates blended finance mechanisms

  • Experience with key clients for 10+ years.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. Relevant Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated track record of winning business and cultivating new clients and partners. Repeat experience leading and/or writing winning technical proposals for Abt clients.

  • Deep familiarity with how government conducts business, and experience throughout the government contractor sales cycle within the region to position, win, and grow business.

  • Deep familiarity in designing and providing technical assistance and implementation support for large, multi-year projects across multiple geographies.

  • Demonstrated understanding of how to integrate research, monitoring, and evaluation; digital and data services; and equity considerations into technical assistance projects.

  • Proven track record of management and leadership, including project leadership, and prior experience managing large projects.

  • Strong collaborator with a history of maintaining successful relationships internally and externally. Prior experience working in highly collaborative, matrixed environments is desired.

  • Skilled in professional/career development of team members and comfortable providing constructive feedback.

  • Strong and collaborative team player.

  • Working rights in the United Kingdom is required.
